The Twelve Days of Christmas Cookie Project, Three French Hens

On the very late third day of Christmas my true love, Haniela, gave to me…three french hens.  And what beautiful hens they are!

If you’ve already met Haniela {or Hani as she’s affectionately known by friends} then you wouldn’t expect anything less.  However, if you’ve yet to visit her beautiful blog, Haniela’s, you need to get there as soon as you’re finished here.

I’m super excited to be part of the Callye’s Twelve Days of Christmas cookie project.

Callye’s cookies have inspired me to think outside of  my cookie cutter collection. Her approach to multi-purposing cookie cutters is very resourceful and just pure genius.
My assignment was to make 3 French Hens Cookies. I don’t own a hen cookie cutter and so I got thinking…cookie thinking, as Callye calls it.
Designing  a Hen Cookie Cutter:

Using the bird, candy, and a small drop shape cutter, construct a hen shape cookie.  You can use a little bit of water as a glue to hold the pieces together.

I also made a large round base and  stools (using round cookie cutters) for each hen.

Decorate cookies as desired with royal icing.

Assemble the stools, using a dot of royal icing glue them together.

Using stiff royal icing  glue hens onto the stools and stools onto the base cookie.
Using pieces of plastic wrap to support cookies in place, until icing dries and hens can stand on it’s own.

On the 3rd Day of Christmas my true love gave to me,  three French Hens.

Thank you, Hani, for creating the most beautiful french hen cookies I have ever seen!
