Decorated Rose Cookies
Believe it or not, I have never been a rose kind of girl. It’s always bothered me that something so expensive dies in just a few days. That doesn’t mean I’m not a romantic, I just prefer gifts that last a little longer…or at least taste good.
I really like these cookies because they were inspired by a paper bouquet my little boy made for me.
When I looked at the rose, I immediately saw a bell. The longer I thought about it, I saw even more cutters that would work.
Chances are, you already own the perfect cutter. Use them as is, or customize them by trimming and adding leaves.
To make these cookies you will need:
- Piping and 20-second icing in the color of your choice for roses
- Green piping and 20-second icing
- Sanding sugar {optional}
Begin by flooding the rose with 20-second icing. If you added leaves wait a bit then flood them also. Let the base completely dry.
Once the base is dry, pipe the swirl with a #2 tip. Begin at the bottom and pipe up toward the top, finishing with a swirl. Immediately sprinkle with coordinating sanding sugar.
Finish up with a little leaf detail if desired.
Each one of these cutters makes a convincing rose. I think my favorite are is the tulip and trimmed egg. What’s yours?
Rose cookies look wonderful in coordinating colors. Add sticks to create an adorable cookie bouquet. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.
Beautiful, such a simple, and lovely design and color combination. Even I can make these! Thank you so much!
Amazing as always!
How exactly did you do the leaves?
I pieced together two cutters. Here’s step by step photos https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2013/06/flower-cookies-with-leaves/
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these roses… I never quite mastered the Wilton rose in frosting but I think I could pull off a Sugarbelle rose cookie… You are brilliant and I love your son’s paper bouquet… That is way more of a treasure than a real flower any day! 🙂
I agree! It’s been hanging in my cookie room for a year. He was so proud when he saw the cookie version.
such a beauty !
Ohhhhhh, I can’t wait to make some!!! Thanks, Callye!
Sunflowers! Love them! I’ve had them last up to 2 weeks when I remember to change the water daily. Not a fan of roses either, they’re only beautiful for about 3 days and then they turn. Like zombies. Ugly black flower zombies.
Ouch! The Rose bashing hurts. Florist roses have been cut for a while and left out of water. The stems suck in air and then can’t take up water = early death! All roses need less than 60 seconds of CPR when you get them home. Try buying 1 rose & a little packet of the dry powder they usually send with roses. Have a clean vase ready with water & add some of the powder (instructions on packet). Fill a shallow bowl or the bottom of your sink with an inch or so of water. Lay the bottom 3-4″ of the rose stem under the water. Using sharp scissors, make a diagonal cut a few inches above the bottom of the rose stem, keeping the stem (and scissors) under water as you make the cut so the stem sucks in water instead of air. Then, stick the freshly cut rose in the vase and enjoy watching it fully open for a week or so! Remove any leaves that would be under water in the vase. Top off the water in the vase daily. If the rose doesn’t perk up, recut the stem a few more inches under water again. WARNING: big rose holidays like Valentine’s Day mean roses might be cut and out of water for much longer periods before you get them and some cannot be revived ;( LOVE all of your cookie roses SSB! Thank your son for inspiring these easy beauties!
These are so clever, Callye! Love where you got the inspiration!
Simple is the best kind of cookie! These are really cute, and I’m with you on choosing the tulip as my fave. Love the bubbly bottom 🙂
They are just GORGEOUS!
I love this. The different cutters sizes just make the flowers *pop*! Beautiful. 🙂
These are wonderful! Will definitely be using this as a reference for an engagement palette I’ll be working on shortly! Thanks!!
Faboulus. Glad to find your blog. <3
Love these, Callye! I have been drawing roses like this for years, but never thought to cookie them this way! Very clever and beautiful! The tulip is definitely my favorite. Where did you get your green plastic two-leaf cutter?
It’s a junky Ebay one. If ya search “leaf cutters” and organize them from least to most expensive, you’ll find them for about .99 with free shipping, usually as a selection out of many. It’s a plunger type, so I took it apart like I did here, https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2013/02/fixing-hard-to-use-cookie-cutters/ but it’s WORTH every one of those ninety-nine pennies, LOL. I used it all the time!
Oh, that’s helpful! Thanks! Will check!
Just found and ordered one! Thanks again! 🙂
Complicated isn’t necessarily beautiful. This is a lovely idea!
You are fabulous!
Love this sweet easy design you are wonderful!
You are freaking amazing.
Oh, and I just noticed the link. Thank you, Callye!
Well, of course a skull cutter! 😉 Love the ease of these!
Callye
You are Impecable!
Love these Roses!!
Thank you so much for the Beautiful tutorial!
Hugs
Paula
You said use 20 second icing? Can I get that recipe please?
The icing is just regular royal icing that is thinned enough that when you dip a spatula into it and let it fall, the “ribbon” takes 20 seconds to disappear. Hope that helps!
These cookies are so lovely! I don’t decorate cookies often enough to get really skilled at it myself.
I just wanted to say Thank You! You are always willling to share and your ideas are wonderful! It helps to know that we don’t always have to go out and buy another cookie cutter!
Thank you!
Charlotte

Callye, Your son’s paper bouquet is darling. It always amazes me how creative you are with cookie cutters. This rose is so sweet and thanks for sharing this. Pinning this!
I saw ur rose cookie picture being used to announce a new cookie business on instagram. The girl’s name is Pauline_Mina. Not sure if u care if others use pics from ur website.
I would rather them not, but with Instagram, it’s hard to combat. Thank you for letting me know =)
There is a girl, Pauline Mina on facebook and instgram stealing your photos and passing them off as hers to start a baking business. 🙁
I just wanna tell that gal NOT COOL!! Callye is so generous with her designs and knowledge… You couldn’t go bake a set following the directions she gave and take your own pictures?!?! A baking business takes a lot of work and if your too lazy to even make and photograph your own portfolio of work you’ll never make it.
Amen!
I concur!
These are simply spectacular! I wouldn’t even know where to begin to think of things like this. I have such a hard time imagining a cookie from various cookie cutters. The roses are just perfect. You amaze me, truly
I wish you would offer classes! I would be the first one on line to sign up. 🙂
Love your cookies!
Thank you!
Wanted to say how gorgeous your cookies are and how do you know when the icing is ready? I always seem to have trouble with it.
I usually let it dry overnight. If you live in a humid climate, maybe a bit longer.
Just saw this recipe via Pinterest and wanted to say I rather get your rose cookies than real roses anyway!
LOL! If roses lasted longer, I would be much more open to flowers, LOL!
I’ve read there’s a 10 and 20 second royal icing rule. Which one is better to follow?
It’s personal preference. Basically you’re trying to make the best consistency to achieve the results you are after. With my recipe, 20-second seems o work best. Some like 15, some prefer 17. You’ll have to experiment until you find what works for you.
Your cookies are stunning. Do you offer classes?
Not at this time. Thanks for your interest!
What camera do you use to take your pictures?
I am no pro, but here’s what works for me https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2012/05/cookie-photography-for-dummies/
What marvelous cookies! Do you offer classes?
Not at this time. I am going to have a baby very soon, so I am taking a break. I write tutorials here so I can stay at home with my children =)
Where can I order your cookies?
I sure don’t…try [email protected]
I don’t sell at this time, but try [email protected]
what is your recipe for the icing?
i saw a post where you share a recipe, is this the same one you use? this one looks different.
i love your work, im going to try to make the super bowl platter..
I tried these and they came out beautifully. I used a smaller tulip, a Christmas bell and a large tulip. I sent some as a get well gift for a relative and then a bunch to my son’s school as a teacher appreciation platter. These are a new favorite. I even posted my success on Pinterest (crediting you, of course) and have had a nice response. Thank you!!
This are truly truly amazing cookies . I just love them all. I will make these rose cookies for my husband on this valentine.
Thank you so much .
thanks to this post I saw a Piglet face and wondered “would you be a good rosebud?”. What do you think?

Thank u for posting this tutorial! I get so tired of making hearts at Valentine’s Day – this will be a great addition/alternative!
P.S. I don’t like cut flowers either. Ever since my grandmother’s funeral, I just can’t stand the smell of bouquet roses, lilies or carnations. Weird, I know. But give me a live rose bush to plant any day! ?
