Simple Patrick Star Cookies

Did you know that goofy old Patrick has a last name?  That’s the kind of thing you learn from making him into cookies over and over again.

It’s no secret that I am not a huge fan of making character cookies, but they’re a fact of life.  So instead of thinking of ways to accidentally break my arm, I decided it might be more productive to think of ways to simplify the inevitable.

Here’s my theory.  Most character cookies are for kids and kids are pretty easy to please {when it comes to sweets}.  They don’t care is Patrick’s eyes are perfectly proportionate or too close together.  If it looks like Patrick, then it’s Patrick.  That’s how I approach character cookies.

You can use the Wilton Patrick Star cutter or any star really, but I chose  a candy corn cutter because it allowes for bigger details.  Avoiding small details is always a good plan, especially if you’re a beginning decorator.

To make these cookies you will need:

Quick Tip* Outline the cookies with red, then thin the excess to make the pink and red flood icing.  If you’re looking for a tasteless red, try tulip red.

Begin by outlining the cookie with red piping icing, then flood with pink.  I used a #2 tip.

After flooding, quickly use red flood icing to make a few random dots on Patrick’s face.  This is called the wet-on-wet technique.  After adding the dots, let the cookies dry completely.  Overnight is best.

The next day, add a few small facial details.  I used a #1.5 tip to add the eye brows and smile and white 20-second icing for eyes.

After the white is dry {about an hour} add pupils using black 20-second icing.  If you’re worried about bleeding, use the fan trick.  It really works.

These were the very first Sponge Bob cookies I ever made, oh so many years ago.

This is today’s version.  I prefer the look of the updated version hands down and they were MUCH easier to make.

I’ve said it once and I will say it again.  You don’t have to kill yourself to make cute cookies.  Masterpieces are always fun but save those for events where they won’t be demolished in thirty seconds or bitten once and thrown in the trash.

  • If you want to simplify things even further try adding pink color to the dough before baking, and pipe the facial features on top.
  • To make my interpretation of Patrick’s shorts, you can learn how I made the flowers in this post.

I’ve been known to look forward to Friday, but this week I will be happier than usual to see it.  The first week back to school may have been harder on me than the kids.  I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend.

Happy Baking!
